2010 SHYC Board Meeting

Officers MeetingYour new club officers met January 9 to organize the activities of the coming year. Carl Hawkins began the meeting with a review of officer responsibilities. Britney Dedmond covered the proposed dates and destinations for cruises. Chip Powell discussed many of the social events and the Leukemia Cup weekend. Pat Anderson reviewed dates and plans for Docklines. Warren Vassar provided a budget overview and Bill Boggs reviewed changes to the membership application.

The results of the meeting include a SHYC calendar with several additional events. The upcoming season will be one of our busiest in many years. See the 2010 Calendar posted under the Calendar tab on the website. Also, expect a Docklines to be delivered in early February with all the details for the season.

2009 Commodore’s Race & Roast

Commodore's CupThe wind was great for the SHYC Commodore’s Race on September 19. Commodore Carl Hawkins, aboard Drambuoy II with committee boat hosts Joe and Anne DelGiudice, reported the race ended within the allotted time with the following winners: 1st Place: Warren Vassar on Paige II; 2nd Place: Harry Coorens on Water Music; 3rd Place: Damian McInerney on Failte. Harry Coorens took home the coveted “Ragged Edge” in recognition of being the first boat to cross the finish line.

Commodore's CupBack at the marina Cris and Britney Dedmond assembled a celebration feast that was enjoyed by 90 members and guests. Kevin Wade and crew roasted and shucked eight bushels of oysters while Cris cooked hot dogs and Britney stirred a hot pot of chili with a boat paddle. The appetizers, side dishes and desserts prepared by members rounded out the fabulous feast. Much appreciation is extended to all who attended and helped to make this event a huge success.

2009 Labor Day Cruising

Labor Day CruiseTwenty boats went cruising on SHYC trips Labor Day weekend. Six boats with twenty-three members and guests went to Crisfield, Maryland for the 62nd National Hard Crab Derby. Fourteen boats with thirty-one members and guests headed for Mobjack Bay, Sarah Creek and Jackson Creek. Both groups encountered rough seas coming and going.

Labor Day CruiseFor the Crisfield group, the highlight was the boat docking competition followed by a fantastic fireworks show. Other favorite events were skiff races, crab races, a parade and the crab picking contest. Somer’s Cove Yacht Club hosted a dinner for other clubs and the entire Stingray group joined in the fun.

Labor Day CruiseAs for the group headed south, Friday provided an excellent sail with wind on the stern. Joining for appetizers, the group filled the cockpit of Casa Blanca to beyond capacity. Friday night offered a gorgeous sunset and then a full moon while at anchor in Mobjack Bay. Saturday evening, all met for appetizers at York River Yacht Haven followed by an excellent dinner at the River’s Inn Restaurant. On Sunday, part of the group headed to Cape Charles, part to Jackson Creek and part returned to Stingray Point. Those at Jackson Creek enjoyed another beautiful evening at anchor.

Labor Day CruiseWe greatly appreciate Charlie and Linda Mann hosting the trip to Crisfield and Carl Hawkins for making the arrangements. We want to thank Ray and Betty White for all their work hosting the trip going south. Everyone had a terrific time–especially Carl who returned to Doctor’s Orders for the first time since his ankle injury early in the season. (If anyone has some more pictures of the trip south, let me know. We were so enjoying the trip that we only took a few shots.)Labor Day CruiseLabor Day Cruise

2009 Shrimp & Crab Feast

Shrimp & Crab FeastWhat could be better–80 pounds of shrimp, bushels of crabs, music, a beautiful evening and 145 of your closest friends to share the experience? Several have mentioned this was the best Shrimp & Crab Feast ever. We greatly appreciate the work of Carl and Duanne Hawkins, Cris and Britney Dedmond, Jim and Anne Wood, Cliff Potter and all who assisted with setup and food to make this such a successful event. 2009 Anchor Out II

Anchor Out IIEight boats and crew set out August 8th for an action-packed, marina-free overnight on the Bay. Fair winds blew us to Little Bay for Anchor Out II. At our pre-cruise meeting, we decided we’d cook out at a campfire later that day. Fearing that we would not be able to find enough drift wood on the beach, two search parties scoured Middlesex County for wood. One group secured wood at Henleys in Hartfield, prepackaged and clean. The second group pulled up to a farm house and, using their feminine charms, talked two good old boys into loading some of their winter supply into the ladies’ pickup truck. Free.

Anchor Out IIAlas, mother nature pulled a fast one once again at Little Bay. The partying group was run off at happy hour by a torrential downpour. Some folks slept that night on soggy cushions. With a campfire blazing and steaks on the grill, Warren and Barbara Vassar got creative–dressed themselves in plastic bags and stayed to cook their steaks. Priorities.

Anchor Out IIA good time was had by all. The club will be glad to know the Andersons are removing their names from future host lists as they have had two memorable storms interrupt their planned club events this summer.Anchor Out II

2009 July 4th Cruise

July 4thFour boats and a minivan cruised to St. Mary’s College for a wonderful concert and fireworks July 3. Pete and Ginny Clay led the cruise on Joyride and were joined in Mill Creek on Wednesday by Warren and Barbara Vasser on Paige II. The boats rafted for cocktails and broke off in time to ride out a significant thunderstorm. On Thursday, they traveled to St. Mary’s City and anchored with Jim and Anne Wood on Quadrant II and Dick and Anna Florence on Rivanna. The group toured St. Mary’s City and watched as the anchorage filled to near capacity on Friday. The concert was excellent and included Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with fireworks. Bill, Melanie, Peyton and Wes Boggs joined the concert by minivan. All except Quadrant II headed home on Saturday. Quadrant II spent several more days cruising the lower Potomac enjoying the nice weather.

2009 Sailstice

SailsticeIt felt more like the Dog Days of August on June 20 as seven intrepid captains and crew set out for Little Bay to celebrate Summer Sailstice. The forecast called for a 104 degree heat index with thunder storms by afternoon and for once the weather service was right.

Instead of the usual egg toss and limbo contest (boring), our creative sailors invented their own games. Quite popular were the dingy races where crews rushed back to their boats as storms threatened. This game proved so popular we played it twice as thunderstorms interrupted beach activities.

Another crowd favorite was “Drag the Anchor”. Fortunately everyone was a winner as no one dragged anchor in the 30-35 knot wind squalls accompanying the sheets of rain, lightening and thunder. (Plenty of heads could be seen behind dodgers as captains watched other boats riding out the storms.)

All participants were deservingly rewarded with a spectacular sunset and great company on the beach at dusk.
Sailstice
Just for laughs one more contest – “Race for Home” began Sunday morning. All boats battled four to six foot seas, 30-35 knot winds and small (medium?) craft warnings to get home. Harbor has a special meaning on days like this.

A special greeting to Donn and Pat Anderson who sailed from Annapolis to join the club. As a former Commodore and lovely assistant the Andersons shared stories of SRHYC’s earlier days.
Sailstice
We greatly appreciate Roland and Pat Anderson hosting an unforgetable event.

Happy sailing to all. Summer has officially begun!

2009 Summer Cruise

Summer CruiseFiring a cannon, watching Wednesday night races in Annapolis, anchoring in Cockrell Creek, dinner with friends at The Crazy Crab, passing a tall ship, sailing with a pod of dolphins, biking tour of Eastern Shore, time each evening to socialize, shopping in Oxford, listening to music in St. Michaels, dinner at The Crab Claw, time with family, mild temperatures, several days of great sailing, walking through Solomons, touring a working boatyard–these are the memories of the Summer Cruise. Over the course of the trip, 14 boats participated. The highlight for many was the tour of Cutts & Case Shipyard in Oxford given by Eddie and Ronnie Cutts. Thanks go to Jim and Anne Wood for ensuring that everyone in the flotilla, whether on land or water, stayed together.

2009 Horn Harbor Anchor Out

Horn Harbor
On a beautiful evening, 11 boats anchored for a heavenly dinner at Horn Harbor Restaurant. In total, 27 SHYC members gathered for appetizers on Rivanna followed by dinner at Horn Harbor. The weather was great for the Saturday trip to the Great Wicomico–just in need of a little more wind to fill our sails. The trip back on Sunday included wind gusts and some rain followed by a clear blue sky and 10 to 15 knots of wind. Thanks go to Jim and Anne Wood for making this such a memorable event.

2009 Shakedown Cruise

Shakedown CruiseWith a forecast for Sunday of high winds, the destination for the Shakedown Cruise was revised to Stingray Point Marina. We thought it would be fair to count all the boats at the marina in attendance. The weather at the marina was great. Our hosts–Pete and Ginny Clay along with Cris and Britney Dedmond–saw that everyone had plenty to eat. It was such a successful event, there have been requests for future dinners together at the marina. We truly appreciate all the work Pete, Ginny, Cris and Britney did to provide a great club event.
